Abstract: This master thesis deals with classifications schemes in multicultural societies. The aim is to investigate how well the Swedish classification scheme SAB has been adapted to the multicultural society of today. I have done a comparative analysis between the SAB and the UDC to see if an international classification scheme would have better possibilities to represent a multicultural society. I have asked some institutions that have a large collection of documents dealing with minority cultures how they experienced the SAB. I have also read literature about classification theories and compared universal enumerative, facetted and special classification schemes to see if the possibilities to classify documents on, or related to minorities differed from each other. My main results are that the possibilities to represent these documents in the UDC are only slightly different from those of the SAB, because both schemes have given priority to one perspective at the expense of another. This could mean that documents of different subjects could be found under the same classification code, which was a problem all the institutions had experienced. The possibilities to classify minority documents did not differ much between the three different kinds of classification schemes. In the end it was always a question of priorities. My conclusions are, therefore, that the theoretical and fundamental basis, as well as the epistemological theories a classification scheme can be based on, contributes to the outcome of compromises and priorities, where one perspective or viewpoint benefits at the expense of another. This means that a classification scheme can be developed according to quite ethnical conditions.
