Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to examine how librarians are working with the selection and purchase of feature films in Swedish public libraries. I was interested in examining the underlying reasons behind the selections. I chose to focus on how librarians are working and reason about the library´s film collection. The purpose of my study is to answer the following questions: • How are librarians working with selection and purchase of feature films in the public library? • What factors motivate librarians´ selection of feature films? • What do librarians reason about the public library film collection? To answer these questions I performed interviews with seven librarians in five different public libraries. The results of the interviews have been analyzed on the basis of the theories and theoretical model of Sanna Talja. I used a translated and modified version of Talja´s model in my analysis. Results showed that the economy was a factor influencing the selection and purchases of films. The accessibility to the films was another factor that influenced the librarians. Librarians can only purchase films with licenses that can be lent to borrowers. Librarians have to purchase films from the contracted sources. Most of the librarians strive to that the library should have a varied film collection. They buy both old films as classics but also more recent films. Some also buy narrower films as an alternative to the commercial films
