The Library on The Library : A study of how the physical library environment expresses the library plan (English)
Abstract [en]

The subject of this thesis is studying how physical library environments express ideas on the function of the library, as stated in guiding documents. The “physical library” is defined as everything inside the library building, and excludes the library architecture, focusing on things like furniture, furnishing and the arrangement of physical media. The two questions asked in this thesis are: What aspects of the idea of a public library’s function, as expressed in the guiding documents of the library, are possible to study in the physical library environment? In what ways can these aspects be studied in the physical library environment? The study of the thesis is divided into two parts, a “prestudy” and a “main study”. In the pre-study aspects are identified by reading guiding documents from different public libraries, and analysing the result together with previous studies on physical library environments. In the main study three Swedish public libraries (located in Helsingborg, Åstorp and Klippan) are visited, and their environments are studied based on theory on what items and means of expression can influence the experience of the library function. The four aspects that are identified in the pre-study are culture, education, accessibility, and development. According to the results of the main study, culture is expressed in the library environment through aesthetics, education through the environment being inviting and stimulating for studies, accessibility by the environment being inviting, functional and democratic, and development by modernity. It is also concluded that the aspects are interrelated to each other.
